Augusta bonding

April 5, 2010

Almost every year since he was 2, I’ve been taking T.J. to The Masters tournament in Augusta, GA. Just a couple hours north of us, it was always a different world for him. As he grew, our trips changed. In the beginning, it was all about the golfers for him. He met Jack Nicklaus. He met Tiger Woods. He got autographs and pictures of all his favorite golfers. But in the last few years, our four days there grew more into a bonding experience for the two of us. T.J. will be the first to tell you that golf ranks somewhere around 4th on his list of favorite sports. But the experience there propels it to 1st or 2nd for just a few days every April. This year will be different. He’s a senior in high school this year, and he’ll be leaving for college in just a few short months. Will our time at Augusta leave with him? I don’t know. Would I be able to ask his professors to excuse my son for those four days? Hey, it’s important. Tiger Woods might need someone to help line up his shot. Sergio Garcia might need help choosing his club. Who knows what might happen! You see, Professor So-and-so, it’s very important that we be there. 😉 So as I head out this year, a lot of mixed feelings head with me. For T.J., I’m sure it’s just another experience. For me, it’s so much more than that. And for my girls who are staying with friends this Thursday-Sunday; it’s, in their words, “Seriously? Yes! Yes! Woohoo!”
